Different kinds of braces to straighten teeth in Brantford Ontario

Types of Braces

At Dentistry Plus Orthodontics in Brantford, we know a bright, straight set of teeth is something worth smiling about. That’s why when it comes to braces, we offer a variety of methods, types, and brands of braces to suite every family member needs and budget.

Today’s orthodontics offer more kinds of braces than ever before. You can go ‘old school’ with metal brackets and wires – these were the notorious “metal-mouth” braces than many adults remember. However, modern brackets are smaller and less noticeable, and new heat-activated archwires (linking individual tooth braces together for alignment) use your body’s heat to help teeth shift into place more quickly and less painfully than in the past. These are the least expensive type of braces and given their high visibility in the mouth, colored bands give kids a chance to express themselves.

Ceramic braces are the same size and shape as metal braces, except that they have tooth-colored or clear brackets that blend in to teeth. Some even use tooth-colored wires to be even less noticeable but the cost is higher than metal braces.

Lingual braces are the same as traditional metal braces, except that the brackets and wires are placed on the inside of teeth making them invisible to others. However, they can be difficult to clean; more expensive; not appropriate for severe cases; can be more uncomfortable at first; regular adjustments take longer and are more difficult than with traditional braces.

Invisalign consists of a series of 18 to 30 custom-made, mouth guard-like clear plastic aligners. The aligners are removable and are replaced every 2 weeks. They are readily removed so patients can eat and drink whatever they want. However, they will not work for serious dental problems; treatment may potentially take longer; are not available for children; and are more expensive to purchase, can be easily lost, and are costly to replace. You also need to be disciplined because the success of these braces depends on wearing the trays no less than 20 hours a day.
